Deep Bodywork that Restores
Experience deep, attentive touch that creates more space and ease in your body.
At Threshold Bodywork, I offer Ashiatsu-inspired, barefoot-led sessions built around steady, grounded pressure.
I pair this with careful listening so your body can unwind and settle in its own time. The natural rhythm of your breath and body helps guide the pace, keeping the experience grounded, supportive, and in-tune with your body.
About Stephanie
I’m a licensed massage therapist with over 14 years of experience in clinical, studio, and spa settings. Over time, my work has simplified and deepened, and I keep coming back to what feels most effective and honest: steady pressure, clear communication, and giving the body time to respond.
My interest in barefoot bodywork grew from curiosity about how broad, grounded contact can help the body shift and reorganize without force. I continue to explore and refine this approach through hands-on practice and study, always aiming for depth, presence, and that little spark of “aha” when the body softens in just the right way.
I value working in a way that feels sustainable for both you and me. Bodywork, at its best, is a shared experience: attentive, respectful, and with space to breathe. I love creating sessions that feel spacious and grounded while also enjoying an occasional laugh.
I feel grateful to practice and build community here in southern Maine. Outside the treatment room, you’ll usually find me sharing fresh meals with friends and family, wandering wooded trails, or spending time by the ocean. I’m also slowly learning alongside my partner through a small syntropic agroforestry project rooted in regeneration and care. Life outside the studio keeps me curious, grounded, and connected—and I try to bring that into my work whenever I can.
About Threshold Bodywork
Threshold Bodywork was born from a simple understanding: meaningful bodywork takes time, space, and presence.
Over years of practice, I’ve found that my work is at its best when sessions are unhurried and relational. When there’s room to really listen. When your body is met, not managed. And when depth comes through steadiness, not force.
Relationality is central to everything I do. Each session is a quiet collaboration, grounded in respect, consent, and attuned presence, keeping in mind the shared humanity of both of us.
This isn’t a place for rushing or fixing. It’s a space for settling. For shifting from effort toward ease. For letting your body soften in its own time.
The name Threshold reflects that intention: creating space for a crossing—from holding into release, from vigilance into rest, and from doing into receiving.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Ashiatsu-inspired bodywork is barefoot-led massage in which I use my feet to deliver bodyweight through broad, steady contact. Overhead bars are used for balance and control, allowing pressure to be deep, sustained, and evenly distributed rather than sharp or forceful.
Using the feet allows for broader contact than hands alone, supporting consistent, grounded pressure and unhurried pacing. At Threshold Bodywork, sessions are attentive and spacious, with pressure guided by what your body responds to best.
Hands may be used as needed for balance, integration, and detailed finishing work within an Ashiatsu-inspired session.

For most people, yes. When practiced by a trained therapist and adapted appropriately, Ashiatsu-inspired bodywork is very safe and well-tolerated. Sessions are always tailored to your body, with ongoing communication about pressure, comfort, and pacing throughout.
Because this work uses broad, sustained pressure, there are certain situations where it may not be appropriate — or may need to be modified. This includes if you:
Are pregnant or may be pregnant
Have osteoporosis or fragile bones
Have had recent surgery or a significant injury
Have spinal instability, herniated discs, or severe disc issues
Have blood clots, clotting disorders, or are taking blood thinners
Have uncontrolled high blood pressure
Have advanced diabetes or neuropathy
Have acute inflammation, infection, or fever
Have any condition where deep or sustained pressure is not advised
This list is not exhaustive. If you’re unsure whether this style of bodywork is appropriate for you, please reach out prior to booking so we can determine what’s safest and most supportive.

Pressure is deep, broad, and adjustable, and always responsive to your comfort.
Because barefoot work distributes pressure over a larger surface area, many clients, especially those who are sensitive to intense or “pokey” sensations that can come with very focused elbow or thumb work, find it feels more supportive and easier to receive.
Many people find this work to be deeply relaxing and restorative, even at the depth it offers. The goal is not intensity for its own sake, but work that feels grounding, effective, and appropriate for your body. You are always encouraged to share feedback so the session can be adjusted as needed.

Because Ashiatsu-inspired barefoot bodywork uses broad, sustained pressure and a slower pace, it tends to unfold beautifully over time. For full-body work, I generally recommend starting with at least 90 minutes. Many clients find that two hours allows the most spacious and complete experience, with time for both focused attention and deeper integration.
Here is a general guide:
2 Hours
For those who want deep, spacious restoration. This time-frame allows us to move slowly, follow patterns as they reveal themselves, and support lasting change. Many returning clients find this becomes their preferred session length.
Spacious. Restorative. A sense of time softening around you.
90 Minutes
Recommended for full-body sessions and for most first-time visits. This allows space to work thoroughly without rushing and to integrate both focus areas and broader support.
A complete, unhurried reset.
75 Minutes
Ideal for one or two focus areas with a bit more integration. This session often works well for the back of the body (back, hips, and back of the legs), with time to address a secondary concern. It offers more spaciousness than a 60-minute session while still being primarily focused rather than full-body.
A focused and balanced session with room to breathe.
60 Minutes
A focused session centered on one primary area, such as the back of the body, hips, or neck and shoulders. This time-frame allows us to work intentionally and thoroughly in one place, giving meaningful attention where it is most needed rather than moving quickly through the whole body.
Focused. Intentional. Direct support where it matters most.
2.5 Hours — Threshold Signature Session
For those who want the most spacious experience possible. This extended session allows time to work deeply, revisit areas as the body shifts, and integrate the work slowly and thoroughly. Longer sessions also allow space for integrated stretching and extended neck and scalp work, helping the body settle and reorganize more fully. Ideal for experienced clients or those seeking the fullest expression of the work.
Unhurried. Integrative. Deeply restorative.

It’s completely natural to have questions about barefoot work.
Foot hygiene is taken seriously and approached with the same care as hand hygiene.
Feet are cleaned at the beginning and end of each session
An alcohol spray may be used during sessions when transitioning on and off the table
Foot coverings are worn when moving through the space so feet remain clean and debris-free
If you have questions or concerns, you’re always welcome to ask.

Draping during Ashiatsu-inspired bodywork may differ from what some clients are accustomed to. To allow for broad, continuous contact and effective barefoot work, one side of the body may be worked at a time with more exposure than in some other styles of massage.
Privacy and professionalism are always maintained, and draping is adjusted thoughtfully throughout the session. Your comfort and consent are central. You’re always welcome to ask for additional coverage or adjustments at any point. -
Appointments require at least 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule.
Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice, as well as missed appointments, will be charged 50% of the session fee. This policy allows the time to be offered to another client and honors the time reserved for you.
If you are feeling unwell, please reach out as soon as possible so we can determine the best next step.
Thank you for respecting the time, preparation, and care that goes into each session.

Trae “This was hands down the best massage I’ve ever had. I had never experienced Ashiatsu massage before, and it completely exceeded my expectations. The combination of deep, consistent pressure and the myofascial release work was exactly what my body needed.
Stephanie was incredibly thoughtful and thorough, taking the time to understand where I was holding tension and making sure every spot was addressed. I left feeling more mobile, relaxed and genuinely better in my body. I can’t recommend this experience enough.”
Tessa
“I knew I needed that but I didn’t know how badly I needed that. Wow, thank you so much!”
